· About

Mindfulness facilitator and degree-qualified naturopath, Alex Newte Hardie, was the resident graduate naturopath at the University of Westminster from 2011 to 2013, before she joined the Light Centre in 2013.

During her early years in clinical practice, Alex found that stress, anxiety, self-criticism, shame and other emotions/states to be the root cause, or primary aggravator of her own and her patients’ health conditions.

She recognised that these habitual patterns directly caused physiological changes and drive behavioural patterns that diminish the health of the individual.

Naturopathy blends modern scientific knowledge with traditional and natural forms of healthcare, focusing on holistic, proactive prevention and comprehensive diagnosis of chronic and acute health issues.

Alex will help you to discover the root cause of your symptoms through a comprehensive case history, naturopathic diagnostics and laboratory tests (where necessary) and then support your return to whole health through nutritional, emotional and physical support. She may also suggest nutritional and herbal supplementation depending on the individual.

Alex is particularly interested in the mind-body connection and her areas of speciality include: mild anxiety/depression, digestive issues, pain management and regulating the immune system.

There isn’t anything mystical about mindfulness – it can be seen simply as a form of brain training. It’s estimated that we spend at least 50% of our lives lost in the trance of thinking – planning, rumination, going over the past and worrying about the future. What has become clear (through over a decade of rigourous research into mindfulness at Universities such as Bangor, Oxford and Harvard) is that this doesn’t have to be the case.

Mindfulness helps you to notice when you have left ‘the present/now’ and disappeared into thought and then it gives you some choice; choice to follow the thought (as it might be useful to you)…or some options around relating to the thought in a different way.

The practice also helps you to increase your awareness of your emotions, your body and your environment to prevent you being caught up in your usual habitual reactions and instead to find your centre no matter what is happening in your internal or external world.

The mindfulness exercises, experiences and practices help you to learn:

    – Effective ways to manage everyday stress

    – Improved clarity of mind

    – Better relationships

    – A new way of approaching difficult situations

    – An ability to more easily tap into your creative side and improve your ability to concentrate

    – A way out of destrcutive behavioural patterns

    – Better physical health – a more stable immune system and pain management strategies

Learning mindfulness in a group allows for support and sharing, whereas learning one to one means you receive individualised support and you can take the course at your own pace. Alex offers both options.
